Installing Wine from the Ubuntu software repository: There are two methods available, installing from the Ubuntu repository lets you install a fully stable version of Wine. The 2 nd method lets you decide whichever version you want to install on your operating system. There are currently three versions of Wine, i.e., WineHQ stable version. Apr 10, 2020 Wine is an open-source compatibility layer that allows you to run Windows applications on Unix-like operating systems such as Linux, FreeBSD, and macOS. This tutorial explains how to install Wine 3.0 and 5.0 on Ubuntu 18.04.

Requirements

  • Supported Operating Systems
    • Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 (both x86 and x64 are supported)
    • Linux distros with GCC 10 or newer, preferably GNU/Linux distro (x86_64 and x86 archs are supported)
    • macOS 10.13 High Sierra or newer
    • Other OSes for which usage via hardpatching is possible
      • Any OS that has support for Wine (Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, ...)
      • Any OS that has support for Mono (Windows, Linux, macOS)
  • Supported Unity games
    • Unity 3 or newer
Important

Games built with IL2CPP are not supported at the moment.However, support for it is planned as the tooling has gotten better thanks to projects like Il2CppAssemblyUnhollower.

Where to download BepInEx

BepInEx is distributed in two builds: stable and bleeding edge.

Stable builds are available on GitHub.
Stable builds are released once a new iteration of BepInEx is considered feature-complete.
They have the least bugs, but some newest features might not be available.
It is recommended to use stable builds in most cases.

Bleeding edge builds are available on BepisBuilds.Bleeding edge builds are always the latest builds of the source code. Thus they are the opposite to stable builds: they have the newest features and bugfixes available, but usually tend to be the most buggy.
Therefore you should use bleeding edge builds only if you are asked to or if you want to preview the upcoming version of BepInEx.

Installing BepInEx

Currently, BepInEx can be installed manually.

  1. Download the correct version of BepInEx.

    Download BepInEx from one of the available sources.
    Pick a version depending on your OS:

    Download one of the following versions:

    • x86 for games with 32-bit executables
    • x64 for games with 64-bit executables
  2. Extract the contents into the game root.

    After you have downloaded the correct game version, extact the contents ofthe archive into the game folder.

    The game root folder is where the game executable is located.

  3. Do a first run to generate configuration files

    Simply run the game executable. This should generate BepInEx configurationfile into BepInEx/config folder and an initial log file BepInEx/LogOutput.txt.

  4. Configure BepInEx to suit your needs.

    Open BepInEx/config/BepInEx.cfg in a text editor of your choice.All options are documented directly in the configuration file.

Further steps and troubleshooting

Some games require some additional changes in order to work around specificlimitations of different Unity versions.

Installing WineHQ packages

Official WineHQ packages of the development and stable branches are available for macOS 10.8 to 10.14 (Wine won't work on macOS Catalina 10.15). Please test these packages and report any bugs at http://bugs.winehq.org.

Prerequisites:

  1. XQuartz >= 2.7.7
  2. Gatekeeper must not be set to block unsigned packages.

Installing:

Both .pkg files and tarball archives are available at https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/macosx/download.html.

Installing from a .pkg file is recommended for inexperienced users.

To install from a .pkg file, double-click on the package, and the usual macOS installer wizard should open. The process should be self-explanatory. It is possible to install the package either for all users (needs administrator privileges), or just for your current user. After the installation is finished, you should find an entry 'Wine Staging' or 'Wine Devel' in your Launchpad. By clicking on it, a new Terminal window opens with a short introduction into some important wine commands. You can now directly start wine/winecfg/... from the Terminal, as the PATH variable is set correctly. For user convenience, the package also associates itself with all *.exe files, which means you can run windows executables just by double-clicking on them.

To install from a tarball archive, simply unpack it into any directory. There is no need to set DYLD_* environment variables; all paths are relative, so it should work as long as the directory structure is preserved (you can skip the /usr prefix though using --strip-components 1).

Uninstalling Wine

  • Remove the source tree and binaries.

Using Homebrew:

Using MacPorts, uninstall the wine package you previously installed:

Replace wine with wine-devel if you installed the development version.

Otherwise and if you used `sudo make install`, revert it:

Then simply delete your local Wine source code directory:

  • Clean-up pseudo C: drive and registry entries as well as all programs installed to C:
  • Check the hidden directory `$HOME/.local/` where Wine stores some desktop menu entries and icon files as it interoperates with the X.Org Foundation and the Free Desktop.

Note: Files in this directory are unused on macOS unless you use a UNIX window manager and other X11 applications instead of the native MacOS apps.

Third Party Versions

Third party versions of Wine, such as Wineskin, Winebottler, and PlayOnMac, are not supported by WineHQ. If you are using one of those products, please retest in plain Wine before filing bugs, submitting AppDB test reports, or asking for help on the forum or in IRC.
